A few years ago when I was making ski movies, as I did for 55 years, I had three extreme skiers sitting around at lunch. We were talking about the advance in... Artículo completo
I agree that skiing can seem expensive to a beginner, but looking at Warren's numbers indicates that it may not be as bad as it seems. Since the median wage in 1948 was around $3200, ( http://www2.census.gov/prod2/popscan/p60-006.pdf) Warren's skis and boots cost him .0134% of his income (assuming that he made the median income, which may, or may not, be true.) The median wage in 2008 (most recent figure) was $50,303, so using his example, I would need $674 to buy a pair of skis (second level quality) and top-of-the-line boots. I think it could be done by exploring "end-of-the-season" sales and inventory closeouts. As far as the expense of lodging, food, transportation, lift tickets, etc., there are also great deals to be had by the careful consumer. Easy? No. Worth it? Absolutely!
Wood skis with bear trap cable bindings. 2 layer boots laced both layers. Fave skis as a teen were my 223cm Volkl Zebra downhill runners. Have enjoyed various other long boards of GS and DH variety. Currently on 218cm Dynastar XJ (i think) and I love them. Balls out full tuck from cornice launch or corduroy black diamonds. I'll probably never learn no matter how many times lift tix get yanked for speed. "I feel the need.....the need for SPEED." Fave boots ever were Salomon Equipe given to me while living in Brussels, BE, 1985, comfy and precise.
Note on sales, Sports Authority in San Jose, CA, aggregated all the old school (no radical sidecut, 210cm and up, a few years back. MSRP ranging from $750 to $1100 and were all priced at $20. My buddy and I picked up 4 pair each.
